Pennsylvania Cerebral Palsy Lawyer
The birth of a new baby is typically a joyous occasion. That is not the case for everyone, however. Cerebral palsy is a birth defect can be devastating because it causes irreversible and permanent damage to the baby’s brain.
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy describes several motor conditions that result in physical disability. It is generally caused by damage to the motor control centers of the brain that can occur during the following life events:
- Pregnancy
- Childbirth
- After-birth development
It is called “cerebral” because the damage occurs to the cerebrum portion of the brain. “Palsy” refers to the lack of movement.

Effects of Cerebral Palsy
The effects of cerebral palsy will vary from child to child. Children who are impacted by cerebral palsy generally, however, face a combination of the following:
- Limited movement
- Disturbances of sensation
- Limited posture
- Lack of depth perception
In some children, cognitive impairments and epilepsy may occur. It is also frequently accompanied by secondary musculoskeletal problems.
How is it Caused?
Cerebral palsy is a serious birth injury that results from oxygen deprivation during birth. This can be caused when the baby is stuck in the birth canal or behind the pelvis, cutting off its access to oxygen. If the bay cannot get enough oxygen, the brain cells die which will cause certain brain functions to stop working.
